Click here to access the digital version of RTOHQ: The Magazine September-October 2011. Introduction by APRO Executive Director Bill Keese This issue of RTOHQ: The Magazine marks another milestone in the publishing history of APRO. We are providing not only a printed edition of this issue to all subscribers, but also a digital version for your convenience. Now you will be able to enjoy all of the informative articles, profiles of family-run rent-to-own businesses and industry events on your laptop, digital tablet and/or smart phone—and no special apps required. The digital format of our magazine offers many advantages over the traditional ink-and-paper edition. This and all future editions of RTOHQ: The Magazine will provide key-word search capabilities to help you zero in on information instantly or locate a specific advertisement. If the font size is too small, no problem—just click a button and the page view is enlarged. You can even display all of the pages in one thumbnail screen shot and then jump to a specific page with a click of the mouse. Do you want to show the magazine to a relative, friend or co-worker? Go to the “share” tab and you can offer the magazine’s content to anyone via an email link, social network post or by embedding the link on your own website. If you want to go directly to the main feature article, just click on the cover and there’s the cover story, instantly. There is also an “issues” tab on the interface’s toolbar where all of our future issues will be available, allowing you to access the archives effortlessly. A “help” button is available, too, in case you have any questions or want to submit comments about the magazine. Of course, we also will provide a link to the digital edition on our website, www.rtohq.org. In upcoming editions, our e-magazine will offer access to additional information that augments the information on the printed page—explanatory text, graphs and videos to accompany articles and vendor advertisements. For example, our coverage of legislative committee hearings in Washington, D.C., might also be embedded with video highlights of the hearing, providing you with a more “real” experience.
Likewise, advertisers introducing new products or services will be able to present a video embedded with their ad to further educate you on that vendor’s latest offerings. After next year’s convention, we will embed videos in our recap of the 2012 event, including the acceptance speeches by RTO industry award recipients, among others. To wrap up each year, we will offer a seventh issue of RTOHQ: The Magazine every January, a digital-only “Year in Review” edition highlighting our family profiles, feature articles and commentaries from the past year’s editions of the publication. We are exploring the possibility of digitally publishing not only our award-winning magazine, but also APRO’s annual Rent-to-Own Almanac, APRO’s Convention and Trade Show invitation to attend and other publications.
The digital Rent-to-Own Almanac would provide a search feature allowing you instant access to APRO members sorted by any number of criteria: zip code, company, corporate headquarters, etc.—and you will be able to access the information you need no matter where you are, as long as your mobile device is handy. Our convention promotions can be embedded with videos of seminar speakers, as well as a video introduction to the host city and hotel. I hope you will find this new member service as exciting to use as it has been for us to develop. The possibilities are tremendous for enhanced communications in the rent-to-own industry. Enjoy!

A New Rent-to-Own Experience by Neil Ferguson Here’s the lowdown on APRO’s 2012 Convention and Trade Show, July 24-26 in Memphis. The RTO industry’s big event will offer many valuable experiences, including insights on how to turn your stores into “experiences”–the good kind for consumers
Who Is Your Competition? by Bill Keese In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.
A Review of Online Customer Complaints by Ed Winn III While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
Rent-to-Own Families, Part VIII by Kristen Card Our series of family-run rent-to-own businesses continues with profiles of the Homeiers in Kansas and two Texas-based sets of kindred colleagues, the Spangles and the Weisblatts.
Future issues of APRO's magazine will be available in this same new format. Click here to access past issues that are not yet archived in the new interface.
