Rent-to-own News - Aaron's Furniture wins green award

May 12, 2011

Woodhaven Furniture -- the furniture manufacturing division of rent-to-own giant Aaron's -- received the Green Save Award at the 2011 Atlanta Business Chronicle Environmental Awards.

Woodhaven operates furniture and bedding plants in several states and has about 500 employees. The award recognizes the company's successful efforts to conserve natural resources, curb pollution and support environmental projects in metro Atlanta and beyond, according to Furniture Today.

Woodhaven produces and sells about $75 million of furniture and bedding annually for Aaron's stores. More than 1,500 units of upholstery and 700 sets of bedding are produced daily.

"Woodhaven's green initiative started out with a simple waste audit, and in a short time we've made substantial progress. Our goal now is to lead by example and encourage other business leaders in our industry to develop their own program," Tommy Harper, general manager, said in a press release.

Woodhaven recycled more than 10 million pounds last year and has reduced the waste sent to landfills by 92% through the use of waste audits, reduction and recycling, the release said. It used to send 15 dumpsters of waste to landfills in a week, but Woodhaven plants now send one dumpster every 45 days.

The company said it will save more than $250,000 this year in waste haul and landfill fees.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
